Do You Need Mexican Car Insurance? A Plain Guide for US Drivers

By Javier Martínez · Written from Ciudad Juárez · Updated October 11, 2026

Yes, if you drive your car into Mexico. US auto policies generally don't cover you there, and Mexican law requires third-party liability insurance for any vehicle on federal roads (GEICO). Buy a Mexican policy before you cross; it can cover a single day or a whole year.

Why your US policy isn't enough

US auto policies generally don't extend into Mexico. GEICO, for example, states plainly on its Mexico insurance page that your US policy won't cover your vehicle there (GEICO). Check your own policy, but plan on buying Mexican coverage.

The practical risk is liability. If you cause an accident, Mexican authorities expect proof that you can pay for the damage. A Mexican policy is that proof.

What to buy: the three choices that matter

ChoiceOptionsHow to decide
Coverage levelLiability only, or full coverage (adds damage and theft of your own car)Liability only usually meets the legal requirement if your car is paid off. If you have a loan or lease, your lender will likely require full coverage that includes Mexico (GEICO).
LengthDaily, 6-month or annual termsShort trips: daily. If you cross more than a few times a year, compare the annual price against your number of trip days.
Where you'll driveBorder city only, or deeper into MexicoGoing past the border strip can also require a vehicle permit. See our vehicle permit guide.

Checklist before you pay

  • The policy is issued by a Mexican insurer and shows your car's VIN and plate exactly as on your registration.
  • The start date and time match when you'll actually cross.
  • You know the claims phone number and keep the policy printed in the car.
  • If you finance the car, confirm your lender accepts the coverage level.

Common questions

I'm only going to Juárez for the day. Do I still need it?

The legal requirement applies to federal roads, and in practice an accident without coverage is costly anywhere in Mexico. A one-day policy is the usual answer for a day trip.

Does my credit card's rental insurance help?

That applies to rental cars, and terms vary by card. For your own car, rely on a Mexican policy.

Do I need anything else to drive in?

Possibly a temporary vehicle import permit, depending on how far you go, and an FMM immigration permit for every visitor. Our trip checklist tells you which apply.
